Getting Ready to Concertize

Greetings All

Tomorrow marks the first day of April and the end run towards the culmination of this term – our spring concert at Christ’s Church Cathedral, 3pm, Sunday April 30.

Wow. Can you feel that slight adrenaline rush of eager expectation? Speaking as the spawn of a long-line of introverts, my feelings tend to waver between terror and grim resignation when considering I might be the focus of someone’s attention. Thankfully I’ve got you great folks to drag me up there.

A cautionary note folks – participation in the concert requires attendance at the April 22nd and 29th rehearsals. In addition, you must have only missed a maximum of 5 rehearsals this term.

As announced last week, your fellow chorister Deanna King has graciously consented to oversee the workings of the concert. There are numerous details to attend to – ticketing, advertising, hospitality – and vee must have order! As Deanna comes to grips with all of this, she will need some help, and as we have all learned – many hands make light work. So feel free to offer whatever help you can in this estimable endeavor – your concert.

Spread the word to family, friends, neighbours, and other fortunate sorts about a cultural event that you, that’s right, you, have had a hand in creating. Hamilton Sings is, because you are. Pat yourself on the back, you deserve it.

Cheers

Concert News

Hi Gang

Including tomorrow, we’ve got six more rehearsals until our Spring concert April 30th. In case you weren’t listening last week, our concert will be held at Christ’s Church Cathedral, 252 James Street North, at 3pm. Though my dog Rosie continues to be indifferent to my rendition of the alto part for Bella Ciao, my cat Biggles looks mildly amused whenever I attempt Farewell to Nova Scotia, so I think I’m making progress. Thank heavens for those web site voice files!

Sue will more than likely bring this up with you all tomorrow; however I would like to plant a seed of ambition in some keener’s head – want to be a concert manager? There are a number of things that need to be organized – tickets, promotion, hospitality, raffles, clean-up, etc. Most certainly, a number of people will volunteer for certain tasks but an organizational guru would be very useful here – just to keep things cohesive. Step up to it! You know who you are.

Though the formation of our not-for-profit corporation has seemed like the focus of our attention this term, I’m frequently reminded that the essence of our organization is a community of all sorts of people who become like-minded Saturday mornings when they gather together to sing. Our language is song, and in song, we tune up our spirits. Pure awesomeness.

Hugs

Special Meeting after Practice to Ratify Board

A special meeting is called for Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:45 at Delta United Church, 47 Ottawa St., South, Hamilton, Ontario.

This meeting will be to ratify a slate of members who have agreed to serve on the Board of Directors of Hamilton Sings! Community Choir.

Current Board Members (who are willing to continue to serve):
  • Jill Detlor, President
  • Anna Camara, Secretary
  • Tom Ciancone, Treasurer & signing officer
  • Susan Noakes, signing officer
  • General Members: Andrea Kurzfield, Bob Edmonds, Brenda Atkinson, Margaret Gauthier, Susan Yazdani
  • Ex-officio (advisory & non-voting): Sue Crowe Connolly, Hanna Bech Mathieson, Agnes Chelminska
We currently have nine voting members on the Board of Directors.  At our last meeting we discussed having a roster of twelve to allow for rotation on and off the Board, yet would allow for some continuity.  It is an exciting time of development for our choir.
If you are interested in serving, the Board currently meets from 7:00 – 8:45 on the first Monday of every month, with the exception of September and January when they meet on the second Monday, and there is no meeting in August.
Please reply to this email if you would like your name to stand on the slate of Directors.  Nominations may also be made from the floor.
On behalf of the Board,
Jill Detlor, President

Tomorrow’s practice at DELTA UNITED CHURCH, 47 Ottawa Street South

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Don’t head to HAAARP tomorrow unless you want to serenade the custodial staff, all by your lonely self. Tomorrow’s practice will instead be held at DELTA UNITED CHURCH, 47 Ottawa Street South

Got Hamilton Sings sheet music lining your sock drawer and cluttering your desk? Bring it with you to practice and give it up when you sign in. We seem to continually print more than our membership roster requires so somehow, somewhere, duplicate copies exist. Can you feel a copyright lawyer breathing down your back? An irate composer sneaking up on you? Give up the evidence and rest easy.

You will already have received notice of a choir meeting at 11:45 tomorrow in order to ratify (and elect) board members for our now official non-for-profit corporation. Please consider nominating yourself or someone you favor for a position on the board. The commitment is not onerous and it would give you an insider’s perspective on what it takes to run an organization such as ours. Like herding cats, I’m tellin’ ya.

6 more practice sessions until our April 30th spring concert folks! I’ve been singing the alto part of Bella Ciao to my dog Rosie and she isn’t impressed yet, but I’m determined to turn that around. My, those voice files on the web site sure are handy.

It’s a ‘trill’ to know you all

Cheers,

Saturday March 18th practice at Delta United Church, 47 Ottawa Street South.

Howdy Heavenly Hummers

Thanks to everyone who managed to navigate past the Skyway bridge high winds closure and made it to the Beginners Music Skills workshop. Sue tells me that it was an enthusiastically participatory evening and suspects we have some budding conductors in our midst. We’ll keep you posted on the follow-up Intermediate Skills workshop once a date has been determined.

After practice tomorrow we are gathering for a casual social – ALL WELCOME! Feel free to bring some hand held food to share and/or beverages. As an omnivore, I’m always ready to descend on a buffet table with wild abandon however not all of us can afford to indulge our inner animal. Specifically, if you have a serious food allergy or intolerance, negotiating a public food event can be like navigating a mine field. I am aware of at least one celiac in our midst. As in gluten-allergy. Hold the toast dear.
So, if there are others among you who count wheat as the enemy, can you make yourselves known? We could put together a “gluten free” table without much difficulty.

Take note that the next Saturday March 18th practice WILL NOT BE AT HARRP. We will be gathering instead at Delta United Church, 47 Ottawa Street South.

Tell your kinfolk, neighbours, co-workers, and anybody fortunate enough to know you that our spring concert is APRIL 30th. Venue to be determined.

See y’all tomorrow.

Beginner’s Music Skills Workshop March 8th & Choir Social March 11th

Hey There

Thanks going out to all of you for your participation in last week’s first business meeting of Hamilton Sings, a non-profit Ontario corporation I’ll have you know. We’re dreaming big and hoping for everyone’s participation in this journey.

Lost and confused about those little marks on paper we hand out at our practice sessions? Convinced that a bar is only for lager louts and a staff is a glorified shepherd’s cane? Your liberation from such ignorance is at hand! Join us at the promised Beginner’s Music skills workshop Wednesday March 8th, 7pm-9pm, at Delta United Church, 47 Ottawa Street South, in their parlour. Pay what you can, suggested amount is $10.

Guess what? You’re throwing a choir social March 11th after practice. Hand-held food and beverages make it extra fun. You can choose to beguile your fellow songsters with your culinary expertise, or pick up a six-pack of donuts to share, or simply satiate with your satisfying conversation. Anything goes but do plan to come – always a hoot.

Spring is in the air, especially this year, so our spring concert is not that far away. Gulp.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (remember those?), have you been listening to those handy voice files at hamiltonsings.ca? Do keep in mind that you can be absent a maximum of 5 rehearsals and must attend the last 2 rehearsals immediately prior to the concert in order to participate. We are gonna rock the house folks!

All the best.
